On Trend Skirt Styles

Autumn/Winter 2016/17 skirt trends are seen all over shops like Zara, Topshop, River Island, H&M and House of Fraser. Some of the trends include designs such as embroidery and floral patterns/ prints.
The material  and style of these trendy skirts are velvets, faux leather, frills and pleats, mesh/lace and ribbed textures. The look and style of them are a- line or tight fitted, usually a mini skirt length or just above the knee with components such as pockets, zips, buttons and buckles.Colours that's stick with the autumn/winter trend that are used for these skirts are block colours such the basic white, black and greys. Also brighter colours such as burgundy, copper, rose gold, browns, gold and sparkely silvers are popular among the trend setting skirts.
ASYMMETRIC LEATHER-EFFECT SKIRT
Leather look skirts are popular this year for the autumn winter trends as they are sold in almost all high-street stores in different shapes and styles. The most reoccurring style for these types of skirts are ones with scrunches and usually they are paired with components such as zips and/or buckles.

Embroidery typically in a floral print or design is a big trend this year that people seem to be loving. Its very different to other trends where the material they use is the trend or the shape and style is, as this is a design that is a trend for autumn/winter. Embroidery is made to look like art work on a canvas which has be displayed on the skirts.

Floral printed fabric is usually a trend for all seasons especially spring, and this season is no different. Autumn/winter is still keeping the floral print trends going, using different colours for the flowers that fit with the season perfectly. The types of flowers are important for these designs as they have make sense to be a trend in autumn/winter, it wouldn't be a trend if they were flowers such as daisies as they are associated with summer.

Lace this year is a trend seen for all types of clothing, but especially for skirts. The style for them are see through with a smaller fabric underlay skirt underneath, just enough so u can still see the lace fabric design. Lace is also added as frills onto skirts therefore one skirt has two different trends on them but using one of the trends to create the other. Components such as zips are the most common to be paired with lace skirts as the fabric has so much design it doesn't need anything to take away from that.
Velvet Flippy Skirt

Velvet is the biggest of trends this year for autumn/winter being the chosen fabrics for most clothing and collections. The different colours and ways they garments are styled are what makes them unique as velvet can be worn in so many ways. The velvet skirt is the popular choice this year that people pair their clothes with to give them the autumn/winter vibe. Velvet skirts don't usually have many components on as on its on it stands out enough.

ASOS Autumn/ Winter 2016
Asos has used a variety of different trends for Autumn/Winter 2016, they promote on trend clothing when you first visit their website and show them in categories of coats/jackets, tops, dresses, jeans/trousers and skirts etc. They always show their most popular items of clothing on their home page and the show offers people can get. The trends they are showing off for this autumn/winter are faux fur, velvet, embroidery, lace, frills, bomber jackets and colours such as coppers, browns and mustard yellows.

They incorporate multiple trends into one item of clothing or outfit shown on a model so that people are persuaded more to get their autumn/winter collection. Asos shows different outfit options and clothing that can be worn with these specific trend for autumn/winter which is helpful and also promotes their other ranges of clothing as well.

Faux fur is a popular trend amongst the coat/jacket section of their website where it is seen on the collars of coats, the sleeves or the entire coat itself. It isn't seen as much on other items of clothing such as tops, dresses or skirts because it wouldn't sell as well. Almost all of the coats/jackets promoted on the website have faux fur on them which makes this the perfect trend for autumn/winter.
Prints and patterns are one of their frequently shown trends on their website which is usually paired with another trend such as a jacket or on a top, skirt or dress. The most used pattern keeping with trends is floral prints which is their main pattern visibly shown on their site.
Embroidery isn't as popularly shown on their website but is still a trend that is seen on various items of clothing, in particular dresses or bomber jacket which is also another autumn/winter trend.
Frills and lace are usually the trends that are paired together on an outfit or item of clothing. Commonly seen on their website on dresses or tops more than anything as they are the easiest items of clothing to show these trends on. Most of their lace pieces are see through or have a vest top attached to it as well. Plain coloured tops have been paired with lace or frilled vest tops sewn on top of them as well, this is also a well known trend on their site.
Velvet is the most popular trend shown throughout the website on all clothing for example top/shirts, dresses, skirts, trousers, jackets/coats etc. They promoted velvet as a collection on their website shown on the home page so that is the first thing people see when they entre their site.

Zara Autumn/Winter 2016
Zara's autumn/winter trends this year have been things such as puffa jackets, velvet, camouflage, lace, leather, frills, embroidery, fur and animal print. These trends have been shown on clothing such as coats/jackets, jumpers, tops, trousers/culottes, dresses and skirts.
VELVET JACKET WITH POCKETS

Velvet is a well known trend that has been shown across highstreet stores, its one of the biggest trends this year and for 2017. The material has been used for pretty much all clothing, in Zara particularly they have used it for jackets, tops, dresses, legging and even shoes.
MILITARY PRINT SKIRT
Camouflage has been shown in a lots of different varieties of clothing, Zara has used camo print in a military style and even gone as far as incorporating badges and medals onto some of the jackets to really fit in with the full trend and stand out.
COLOURED EMBROIDERED TOP
One trend in particular that has been very popular is embroidery, they have translated this into their clothing by embroidering jackets/coat, tops and dresses. Usually the embroidery is a big statement piece on the front of the clothing and on some of the jackets in Zara it is a big piece on the back. A lot of the embroidery is floral throughout Zara's collection but there are a few embroider patterns and small images on some of the shirts.
METALLIC QUILTED JACKET

The puffa jacket is seen all over the Zara store in different styles, colours and sizes. Zara has branched out and have an array of different colour puffa jackets as well as the typically known black ones. None of their puffa jackets are the same sort of styles so there are many options to choose from, they are the perfect trend for this autumn/winter.
LEATHER JACKET WITH ZIPS

Leather has always been a widely known trend amongst people through the season, not so in summer but especially in autumn. Zara don't just do the original leather jacket they also do leather dresses, tops, trousers, shoes and bags. They have a large selection of styles through the collection pieces which gives a lot of different ways u can wear a leather outfit that suits everyone.

Charlene Dunbar: African Fashion Designer

Charlene Dunbar is a well known African fashion designer who has their own brand of clothing called Suakoko Betty. The name of her brand fits well with her theme of clothing and her African heritage as Suakoko is the name of a place in Liberia. As a child she lived in her hometown Monrovia, Liberia before moving to Atlanta where she still currently lives.

Cece Jumpsuit - Rust

Her brand Suakoko Betty was founded in 2007 and since then has been a success. Suakoko means place of new beginnings and Betty represents the western connection, this is how she was inspired to create this brand name. With her traditional African styled and African influenced clothing she has stuck to creating beautiful garments that stick true to were she is from. A lot of her clothing has very bold recognisable African prints on them as a lot of her fabrics that she used are hand dyed in Liberia. Her collection has outstanding colourful patterns that really stand out as statement pieces and her designs and style of clothing is very adventurous and fun.

Makeba Dress/Cocktail - Periwinkle

Charlene's specialty in clothing is dresses and a lot of her collection is made up of them which gives her pieces a spring/summer theme to them showing that they are made to be worn specifically for these seasons. All of her clothing is hand crafted and most of the fabrics are made in Ghana although a lot of her pieces are made in the USA. Because of this she have a very limited quantity to make sure that each garment that is made is unique so not everyone can by one.

Bae Shirt - Checker

She also has her own website: http://www.suakokobetty.com/

PFW: Rick Owens s/s 2017 Review

Rick Owen wowed people this year with wrapped 3D fabrics, textures and faux fur detail. He used layers upon layers of chiffon fabrics bulking and shaping it into dresses and skirts. He didn't use a variety of colours but the plain and basic colours he did use complemented each other well making the pieces come more to life. The only bright colour he did use was yellow and that stood out on the runway the most, with long maxi dresses in full colour people were fascinated by them.
This year he took a risk and it payed off, he chose to think outside the box and be unique which worked in his favour. All of his pieces were very similar in the sense the he used a lot of fabric in the collection and all the pieces of clothing were big. Everything was oversized and loose fitted apart from the skirts but even then chiffon draped off of them.

Jackets were an item of clothing that stood out in his range as they were oversized with large high necks and large sleeves. The jackets fitted well as a pieces with the long skirts that dragged along the floor. His collection was clearly not revealing as all of his pieces cover the models pretty well. Not a lot of skin was showing unless the models were wearing skirts or short dresses with short sleeves.

Detail on some of the pieces were so stunning and intricate with small embroidery and others had feather and fur which was beautiful and very different. His collection this year wasn't the same as others but everyone loved it.

MFW: Salvatore Ferragamo s/s 2017 Review

Salvatore Ferragamo showed us a range of textures on the runway this year with knitted/ribbed pieces and pin-tucked ruched designs. Along with the most common recurring design of the puffy shoulder and sleeves, that also branched out into shaping curvier areas of the clothing. During the show people saw similar designs throughout which meant people weren't blown away with the collection.

However there were some beautiful floral prints/patterns and lots of colour tones used throughout whether that be all bright pieces or dark toned. The flower designs and bright colours were mainly used on dresses or skirts giving them the summer spring vibe which you expect.
The classic trouser and blazer/ trench coat combination was my favourite out of the collections and it seemed to be others as well. Also a favourite design piece out of the collection that was popular was the see through patterned outfits which were stunning. The clothing really shaped a silhouette of the models wearing them and this stood out during the show.
Unfortunately the Salvatore Ferragamo catwalk show didn't live up to the expectations of many as people agreed that he played it safe this year when it came to the clothes. What was most talked and raved about was the shoes as they were a statement that he is very well known for and his bags were what stood out the most.

LFW: Preen s/s 2017 Review
Preen by Thornton Bregazzi gave an outstanding show, with their collection showing a range of bright beautiful colours mixed with the classic black and whites. This year for London fashion week they had a theme of flowers that seemed to have an influence in their pieces one way or another. This gave a sort of innocence to the clothing yet they were so revealing with the sheer lace/mesh fabrics.
Dresses were a big part of their collection this year, as were their dated look of classic trousers and a white blouse. They changed things up by adding a twist of frills to their pieces.

They have always been known for their vintage style and how they have used and incorporated lace or ruffles into most of their pieces. This year people were expecting just that and what was delivered was even bigger and better than what could have been imagined.

People were mesmerised by their magical dresses covered in glitters, pentagrams, stars and stunning flower patterned embroidery. Most of their pieces were made with chiffon fabrics to give that daring feel which people loved so much. This collection is said to be their best one yet and I would have to agree.

NYFW: Monse s/s 2017 Review

Monse is the newest most anticipated designers to hit the runway at New York fashion week this year, upon making their first appearance in the public eye only a year ago. Their spring/summer 2017 collection this year took a twist mixing deconstructed business attire with fun and dazzling eveningwear. A lot of their materials were pinstriped silk blouses and trouser or bright sequined skirts and dresses, they were basic yet stylish and were a big statement on the runway. I liked their modern take on fabrics and designs as the simplicity in the way they looked were breath taking, this year and by the sounds of things they took everybody by surprise.

Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia glammed up the catwalk and took risks with off the shoulder and shape fitting clothing that originally were made to be covering. They said “We figured out that our woman wants to wear a blouse at night, and if it’s a dress, it’s going to be very subtle. So we kept the shirting that we’re about, and the stripes, but we did it for every price range and for every age, too.” After seeing the photographs from the Monse show I took the collection as a fresh new look that hasn't been done before, they explored the cocktail and black-tie dress code on a wider spectrum and it worked.
